Poetry for Robots

In the commentary Poetry for Robots by Roopika Risam, the author discusses the question raised by the Arizona State University Center for Science and the Imagination, “What if we used poetry and metaphor as metadata?”

On the original project website, users were invited to click on a picture and write a poem about the image they’ve chosen.  Results are then stored to be later digested and analyzed to see what connections can be made between images and poetic metaphors as a means of both expanding how objects are retrieved, as well as providing a human “stamp” on algorithmic categorizations and AI injestion.

Risam queries, “…might the robots be able to spontaneously generate poetry?”  While the Google AI project is already trying this experiment, I’d say that Donne and Cummings are still safe….for now.
